two years ago donna moved to vermont for work and i stayed in oregon. i leaned into my obsession with rc helicopters and rode a onewheel - a lot. after about 2000 miles of urban exploration and trail riding i eventually had a bad fall, knocking in a few teeth, fracturing my jaw, and injuring both writsts.
no longer able to hide from the holes, i approached what was missing and went to therapy. encouraged to make something, anything, i sharpened a wooden hand plane and made some shavings. i was futher encouraged to keep exploring without expectations. so pursuing an old dream i reached out to charles fox who runs a lutherie school in portland. graciously he gave me a tour of his shop and we went to lunch. i was ill prepared to take advantage of this opportunity, but charles accomodated my introspective position. he suggested that i get a copy of "contemporary acoustic guitar design and build" - an expansive two volume treatise by trevor gore and gerard gilet, stating that this represented the state of the art of lutherie. i ordered the books from australia, setting in motion the following process - |
